I just wanted to comment, that we are talking about a God who has no limits. A Savior that heals people for touching his cloak because of their faith. We can not choose one way or another the sovereignty of the God we serve. But as far as the things posted here, I too think it is not our decision that we are saved. It is God's grace on who he chooses. Not if we elect ourselves for regeneration. Regeneration is done by Christ making us a new being! I have been studying this subject because I see people who claim salvation because of a decision to turn their will over to God, and pray this sinners prayer, but no regeneration happens. Then for others they are saved this way.
People we are limiting God to what we understand about a God who is limitless. If you can truly understand the limitless of God........
As far as the modern evangelical world doing things to draw people in, or being a salesmen for God, obviously this is what the church has come up with, to further the kingdom. I will not question what God is doing in the world, but I don't like the watered down gospel that appeals to many right now that most are teaching in this scene. Not all but most.

I like hearing what people are thinking about, and how they are wrestling with stretching their perspectives on God and His Kingdom. Something I've noticed though has me concerned...

It seems to me (as in this interview) that a lot of Emergents are beginning to sound just as jaded and harsh as the evangelicals they are trashing. I was once on the evangelical side, throwing people under buses to make my theological points, but then I fell in love. I fell in love with Jesus and people. And then I began to hear how horrible I was talking about people. It sounded so ugly and harsh.

Please just remember knowledge puffs up but love builds up. I'm glad we're growing in deeper knowledge and understanding. And I think it's OK to hold different opinions and viewpoints on things. But the WAY we state our emerging viewpoints can make all of the difference in the world. Seasoned with love and grace!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!! Grace & Peace all...

Sean Nelson

Not that the interviewees are necessarily mystics, but the some of the parallels are interesting:
From ‘Radiance, a Spiritual Memoir of Evelyn Underhill’ ed. Bernard Bangley, Paraclete Press, P. 8 & 4
“Willie was beginning to recover from the disease of spiritual self-seeking, which had crippled his first years. He had seen, at last, the face of the Great Companion. He knew what he wanted: the constant presence of that mysterious guide, the constant assurance of a strange but enduring amity. He had come to the second, or illuminative, stage of the journey, for his way, after all, had been the old mystic’s way. There is no other practicable path for those who are determined on reality, who have found out the gigantic deception we accept as the visible world, the gigantic foolishness of our comfortable common sense.” (The Gray World)
Underhill on the eve of her 17th birthday: “Goodbye sixteen years old. I hope my mind will not grow tall to look down on things, but wide to embrace all sorts of things...”

The American church is in trouble when we start getting rid of absolutes, hell, and telling people that they should believe a certain way.
The emerging church is a strong wind that is blowing. God has spoken through his word and to say that if we understand the message, we are arrogant seems to insult God to me. It seems you want to say "God has spoken, but he mumbled. We can't be sure what he meant".
Too bad

Oh my. This post is timely. I think the interview articulated some things very well in a concise way which I have not been able to.

A prof of mine just introduced me to "A New Kind of Christian" by Brian McLaren after some questions I asked and my mind is going in a million different directions (mostly positive). So, for somebody just getting her feet wet, the interview was really helpful.

Christen

I love when guys can articulate it well and say the same things because a lot of people are skeptical of 'big names' even if they are saying truth, us types are a lot like that too, we'd rather just not listen to 'bill hybels' or someone of that nature even though there is a lot of truth n what he says.

So props to these guys for voicing where they are in their journey, voicing it well, and helping some alternatives get some air time.

Nathan,
yes, I would guess both guys are well versed in McLaren,Bell and others.I think the interview helps pastors within traditional evangelicalism understand what is going on in this twenty something+ generation.

Good to hear from you .. and Maria as well
DF
