More on Obama, Zizek, Wright and the church in America

Always willing to stir up a little more trouble for myself, I posted over at church-and-pomo blog concerning Zizek, Barak Obama, Jeremiah Wright and the American church. For those of you interested in such things, you can find the post here.

    David,

I read your post on Church and Pomo Culture a few days ago – and thought it was insightful and thought-provoking.

I would only push back on the idea that all christians – or perhaps even most – are looking for a reprieve from examining our own churches’ life for moral vigor. I agree with the suspicion regarding real change actually happening – but I believe hope is a huge part of the Christian worldview. Ironically, Obama elicits more hope in me than any candidate I can recall during my adult lifetime – even though I disagree with much of his politics.

Hope is often counterintuitive – especially in the most hopeless cases. I’m not going to cast a vote looking for a reprieve from anything – but I am extremely frustrated that I will have to vote for 1 of 3 candidates when I would rather have additional choices. Our 2-party systems does not currently allow for realistic 3rd party candidates. So perhaps we vote, hoping we’ve made the best choice, without dismissing our own moral obligations.

That said – I do think that the institutionalization of everything in the West – including the church – creates an environment where the many leave the heavy lifting to the few “professionals” who know best…
