I’m teaching my summer class in the Northern D.Min program this week. The class, “church in the postmodern context,” is both an exploration of ecclesiology, and the cultural categories of modernity verus postmodernity. It is built on my own book the Great Giveaway as well as Jaimie K Smith’s Who’s Afraid of Postmodernism? Also foundational is Nancy Murphy’s (along with James McClendon) “Distinguishing Modern and PostModern Theologies.”Modern Theology 1989 (which can be downloaded from the web). From these introductory texts we explore a host of fine writings in the field of postmodernity, Scripture and theology to work on an analysis of each student’s ministry issue in their Doctor of Ministry program. It’s always a busy and stimulating week. I’ll be back posting in a couple of days.

Nancy Murphy’s text is “foundational” in a course on postmodernism? Seems we just can’t get away from that metaphor can we?
Enjoy your class!
Sometimes the foundation is all you can see. Sometimes you can’t really even tell what’s supposed to stand upon it. But sometimes their kinda beautiful in themselves.

I enjoyed your book ‘The Great Giveaway’. Thanks for writing it. In light of you post-modern observations I wondered if you have ever read Ten Philosophical Mistakes by Mortimer J. Adler. I found his discussion concerning Locke’s definition of Idea to be of great interest, especially how this affects post-modernity.
