One of the ideas we are working with is a community garden.. we already have some space on offer from the city. Working shoulder to shoulder with those who are homeless or addicted, some of whom have more gardening skills than we do.. very appealing who will be the learners and who the teachers..

I have been involved in a ministry to the homeless in Camden (NJ) and Philadelphia (PA) over the last eight months. As I ministered in these areas among the poor, the Lord impressed upon me the importance of setting up a book table along with our food and clothing distribution. I freely give away Bibles and other basic Christian literature (i.e., John Stott, John MacArthur, Charles Swindoll, Max Lucado) so that the homeless can continue to feed on the Word after we leave (we preach, counsel, and minister every Sunday for about an hour before church). Several people who live in the area have come to me and told me that they observe the poor sitting on the street or at the transportation depot (in Camden) reading their Bibles and other Christian books during the week at various times of the day. Not having the resources to spend their time devouring other forms of media (movies, TV, computer, video games, etc.), the homeless are in a unique position to spend their time in a book.

Thank you for highlighting this "book clubs for the homeless" idea. It will now probably be the next evolution in our "books for the homeless" ministries in NJ and PA.

YES! to this post. I resonate in a huge way with your conceptions of justice.

I'm part of the Storyline Community, a network of house churches in urban Dallas. Last year we began hosting events called "Neighbors' Lunches", where we invited our poor and homeless neighbors in downtown to sit down with us for a meal. We don't make a presentation. We don't serve the poor a meal. We don't ask our homeless friends to stand up and talk. We just share a really nice meal together - family style. We got our inspiration from Jesus in Luke 14, who said if you throw a banquet, you shouldn't invite your rich friends but the poor, crippled, etc. These have been some of the most transformative experiences of my life. Several of our homeless and poor friends have become significant parts of the community through these lunches. They continue to teach us young professionals about faith and life. Last month we had a neighbors' lunch with an impoverished African American church in the area as a way of witnessing to racial reconciliation in the city. This to me - genuine, inclusive relationships between rich and poor is an embodiment of the justice of the kingdom.
