"This cannot be enforced top down although it can be led by those in leadership modeling the kind of life we are leading others into."

I have seen several instances where the organization takes on the character of the leader. Dave, your words are powerful and true. I am challenged to examine how my actions line up with my words as I move through the place where I live.

Victoria and I started inviting our immediate neighbors to our First Fridays get together. We had our 4th one last night. We were both amazed to see how many people are craving fellowship. We feel like we've begun the process of getting to know, and being known by the people we see every day. We pray that they will see Jesus in us. Thank you for so consistently speaking about living missionally in your neighborhood and church. Your ideas and stories are incredibly instructive for us.

Apart from this leadership by life I'm not sure we have anything we can really call "leadership." Was it Gandhi who said "Become the change you seek" and Buber, "The wise man will become a teaching."

Excellent thoughts.

"This cannot be enforced top down although it can be led by those in leadership modeling the kind of life we are leading others into."

This reminds me of another verse in I Thessalonians which is close to my heart and philosophy of ministry. In verse 2:8 Paul says, "We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us."

Great reflection. We are struggling with these issue right now in respect to have a small community of people who are fairly new to faith and/or struggling with significant life crises. Finding a way to navigate the tension between being over-available for these crises and being too distant is hard. Much to consider.

Peace,
Jamie
